The Art of the Moment
January 25 @ EST 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
On locating the telling details, animating essential slices of time, and finding literary urgency in our obsessions.
There are many ways to classify a memoir—Family Memoirs, Journey Memoirs, Healing Memoirs, and others. In this webinar, explore what Kephart calls the Art of the Moment—books or essays that apply wonder, mystery, and deep seeing to an instant in time.
Learn the difference between telling details and failed details, and how we can locate our literary urgency inside our obsessions. How do obsessions both intensify our storylines and exult in the tangle of tangents? How can our exploration yield new truths and forge unexpected connections? How can we make the best use of our own obsessions—finding, in our personal fascinations, a universal story?
Featuring a range of examples, a series of prompts, and an illustrated example of her own work (created for this session), Kephart will lead participants toward a story of their own.
In this webinar, you will:
- CONSIDER new ways to identify and classify memoirs, including your own
- LEARN to capture and forge meaningful telling details (and avoid the details that fail)
- REFLECT on the “obsession vessel” as a generator of story and language
There will be time for a Q&A at the end of the presentation.
This webinar is for writers interested in expanding their ways of seeing, strengthening their facility with telling detail and translating their obsessions into story.
